On 29th October, the ‘2024 Cross-Strait Symposium on Finance and Business’, co-hosted by the School of Business of Soochow University (Soochow) and Soochow University Business School (Soochow), was successfully held in Soochow University, Taiwan. The theme of the seminar was ‘New Vision of Sustainability: Challenges and Practices of ESG, SDGs and Circular Economy’. President of Soochow University, Zhan Qianlong, Dean of the School of Business, Ruan Jinxiang, Secretary of the Party Committee of Soochow University Business School, Liu Zhiming, as well as faculty members of the School of Business who came to Taiwan to participate in the symposium, representatives of the faculty and students of Soochow University, and representatives of Taiwan enterprises attended the opening ceremony.
Zhan Qianlong reviewed the history of ‘Cross-Strait Symposium on Finance and Business’ as one of the longest running academic exchanges between cross-strait universities, which is now in its 28th year since the first symposium was held in 1997. The symposium not only promotes cooperation and improvement in academic fields, but also connects the two universities and enhances mutual friendship, making concrete contributions to the development of cross-strait exchanges.
Ruan Jinxiang pointed out that every year the Cross-Strait Finance and Business Symposium focuses on current hot and important topics. Against the backdrop of the worsening climate crisis and the promotion of ESG and SDGs, enterprises are faced with the needs and challenges of shifting to low-carbon and sustainable business models. Therefore, this year's topic is ‘A New Vision of Sustainability: Challenges and Practices of ESG, SDGs, and Circular Economy’, hoping to stimulate more sparks and promote the sustainable development of enterprises. We hope that the conference will stimulate more sparks to promote the sustainable development of enterprises and continue for better communication, and wish the conference a complete success.
Liu Zhiming, on behalf of Soochow University Business School, congratulated on the success of this symposium, pointing out that this is the first time that a delegation from Soochow University Business School has come to the treasure island of Taiwan since 2018, and believed that through this symposium, experts and scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait will have in-depth exchanges and discussions on topics of mutual concern, and will learn from each other in academics and promote each other's progress. It is hoped that the two colleges will use this as a platform to strengthen comprehensive cooperation, achieve win-win development, and jointly make due contributions to the promotion of the prosperity of cross-strait cultural and educational undertakings.
During the presentation stage, around the conference theme, Mr. Wu Zexin, Chief Sustainability Officer of ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, gave a presentation on ‘Strategic Focus and Value Creation of Corporate Sustainability’, and Professor Ma Juan, Distinguished Professor of the School of Business, gave a presentation on ‘Why communicating product safety isn't safe? Two field experiments from China's milk powder industry’.
In the breakout sessions, 24 scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait reported and exchanged ideas on economic ESG, management ESG, taxation and social welfare, financial SDGs, financial accounting, digital technology, and other related topics that are both theoretical and practical.
This conference is of great significance in advancing the research cooperation between scholars from both sides of the Taiwan Strait in the fields of responsibility and sustainable development, further strengthening the friendly cooperation between Soochow University in Taiwan and our university, and promoting the prosperity of cross-strait academic exchanges.
