Located in a beautiful city intensively dotted with lakes, Laurentian University provides us with a rare opportunity to join the Train-the-Trainer program. As a newcomer of Canada, I’m deeply impressive of the peaceful and beautiful environment, the friendly people around, the well-designed program, and the inevitable cultural difference as well.

Notably, the program focuses on the professional accounting curriculum and course material developed by CGA-Canada. In the light of the well-developed teaching and learning workshop as well as the academic seminar, we know, intuitively and dynamically, more about Canadian education, Canadian culture, Canadian people, and so on.

All LU professors involved are so dedicated and committed to the courses delivered to us. Particularly, they all cordially encourage us to communicate with them, rather than sitting and listening. Generally, most Chinese are not so willing to directly express themselves, especially in public. Therefore, the professors always say to us “Don’t be shy” and always encourage our class participation with great patience in a most effective matter. Gradually, we’ve adapted ourselves to the flexible atmosphere here and become eager to share our experiences and feelings with our counterparts.

Apart from the improvements in teaching technology and skills in communication, we also have a glimpse at the real life of Canadian people. Thanks to the hospitality of some professors in LU and some local people, we’ve got the chance to visit their houses or join the camping. We find that people here live in harmony with the natural environment and with each other. Although most of them originate from various nations or cultures and have diversified lifestyles, they show mutual understanding and respect to the different customs, conventions and taboos. Consequently, multi-culture can co-exist so well in Canada.

One of the most attractive things occurred during the training program is the visit to KPMG in Northern Ontario. Hosted by Laurie Bissonette, a very friendly, enthusiastic and contagious lady, the meeting with KPMG staff proves to be practical and beneficial to us. Some of them gave us a brief but explicit introduction of the routine business, the structure, corporate values and social responsibility of KPMG. In this setting, we become aware of the operation of the firm in the local area, as well as the opportunities and challenges it faces. Among other things, what impress me most are the efforts that KPMG has taken to promote the community programs, such as volunteers and office fundraising activities for natural disaster relief. Actually, corporate social responsibility has never been more front-and-centre in today's business environment. Being involved in community programs, people will develop a sense of belonging and achieve a work-life balance, which also coincides with the core values of KPMG. Similarly, KPMG in China also dedicates a lot to the community involvement. For example, it donated about RMB 8 million Yuan to the disaster-affected area after the earthquake in Sichuan province last year. As a matter of fact, organizations worldwide devote more and more to their corporate responsibility function. Therefore, the value of People Helping People will eventually help the success of KPMG itself.

To sum up, the Train-the-Trainer program allows us to take a closer look at accounting profession and accounting education in Canada. Meanwhile, we’ve got a chance to be exposed to Canada culture, which may play a more important role in broadening the mind in the long run. Anyway, if more opportunities like the visit to KPMG could be provided, the program would become more meaningful and helpful.
